Betterspot offers a router that comes with an integrated VPN service. The router's compact design makes it useful for travelers; however, it is overpriced and lacks powerful security features.

VPNs or Virtual Private Networks are important internet security solutions that encrypt your internet data traffic and protect your activities online. Unfortunately, VPNs can often be difficult to set up, especially for beginner users. Often, VPN apps interfere or clash with other clients and software, others require tricky manual setup, and many more limit the number of devices that can be used simultaneously.

Betterspot VPN claims to offer a solution to all of these issues, as the router VPN requires no manual setup and enables support for an unlimited number of devices. However, it is extremely expensive, and it does not offer the level of security that we would expect.

Betterspot VPN Security

40%

Betterspot is a simple VPN router that will re-route your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel of servers. Connect all devices and platforms to your Wi-Fi network, and the VPN connection will automatically protect your activities. The Basic Betterspot VPN router package comes with support for Tor over VPN, which means that you can re-route your internet data through the Tor network for an additional layer of security, as well as access to restricted Onion sites.

When you connect to a VPN such as Betterspot and then to the Tor network, it is known as "Tor over VPN" or "Onion over VPN." This method will offer all of the security offered by the Tor network in combination with the privacy protection offered by the VPN to hide your real IP address from Tor nodes. The standard Betterspot VPN router mode can be easily changed to connect to the Tor network. This is a useful option to have, although it won't be necessary for most users.

The VPN router is built on a Mediatek MT7620A device that offers 128MB of RAM and supports OpenWRT and Linux. The VPN works by encrypting your internet connection and re-routing it through a secure encrypted tunnel of servers. This means that all of your devices and platforms connected to your Wi-Fi network will be protected from malicious cybercriminals and hackers.

Your internet activities will also be hidden from your ISP (Internet Service Provider), the government, and any other third parties that may be attempting to access or steal your private internet information. We recommend activating a VPN whenever you use the internet, especially on unsecured public Wi-Fi networks such as those in hotels and cafes. Betterspot offers an interesting portable VPN solution for travelers. However, it is, unfortunately, not as powerful as some of the best VPNs on the market.

Betterspot VPN Features

35%

Betterspot offers an easy way to set up a VPN service across all of your devices and platforms. The Betterspot VPN router requires power through its USB port and a connection via Ethernet. Once connected, the VPN router will automatically access an IP address and configure itself.

If there is an issue with the device's status, an LED light will turn red. When you are connected, the VPN will turn blue. Once the router is activated, you can connect to it from your devices and platforms using your username and password. There are some advanced features in the VPN's settings and options. It will be necessary to access these features through the VPN's web interface at admin.betterspot.com. There are dedicated Android and iOS apps too that offer easy access to the interface too.

A simple interface reveals the current VPN server location. The VPN router automatically selects the 'best performance' VPN server in terms of speed and geographical proximity. There's a relatively small server network with locations in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Singapore, and Switzerland.

The interface also allows you to change your personal network name and password and deactivate the access point if you want to connect to the router through cable alone. This may be useful if you are traveling and you want to hide your devices from others.

Unfortunately, the Betterspot VPN router is not as easy to use in reality as we had expected. Signing up for an account was a relatively difficult process too. The premium service is not cheap either, especially when compared with most other VPN services on the market. A subscription with Betterspot will set you back $99 if you select the Basic package. This subscription level does not offer the fastest speeds, but the VPN app is free after the initial payment.

To access the Betternet Premium service, it is necessary to pay a full subscription. This comes in at $19 a month on the rolling monthly contract, or $10.75 a month on the 12-month plan, which is extremely expensive compared to other premium VPN services like NordVPN, which costs less than $5 a month on its annual plan. There is also the option to purchase the VPN router with lifetime access to Betternet Premium, but this will set you back $399.

Unfortunately, the VPN router app does not come with a free trial, which means that there is no way to test the premium service across your devices before committing to a paid plan. There also does not appear to be a money-back guarantee, which is disappointing considering that almost every other premium VPN service comes with an industry-standard guarantee of at least 30-days.

Is Betterspot VPN Router Good?

At first glance, Betterspot looks promising, and the compact design makes it a decent option for travelers. However, the VPN is arguably overpriced, and its performance is disappointing. Betterspot may work well as a travel router as it can simply be plugged into your laptop via its USB cable within seconds. It is also relatively easy to use. If the connection drops, the LED light will notify you automatically.

Unfortunately, the VPN is just not powerful enough. There is an extremely small network of servers, disappointing performance, and an expensive subscription price. Therefore, we would not recommend Betterspot to anyone looking for a premium security solution.

There is a host of other premium VPNs on the market that will offer a more powerful and reliable service than Betterspot for a lower price. Take Surfshark, for example, the VPN comes in at as little as $2.49 a month and delivers unlimited simultaneous connections, powerful performance, and advanced security features. It is compatible with Wi-Fi routers too.
