Freedome is a simple, well-designed VPN that comes from the trusted Finnish internet security company, F-Secure. However, it does not offer an extensive range of features and it is relatively pricey.

F-Secure as a company is known for its anti-virus software but it also comes with a decent, although simple, VPN product, F-Secure Freedome. The VPN service does lack flexible subscription options and offers few additional features.

The company has developed a relatively unique VPN product, although its lack of advanced features, basic user-experience, and expensive pricing options mean that it cannot yet compete with some of the best VPNs on the market.

We would like to see F-Secure expand its server network, alter its pricing structure, and increase its transparency when it comes to user privacy and security.

F-Secure Freedome VPN Security

70%

When you activate a VPN, it creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a remote VPN server. Your online traffic is rerouted through the tunnel and exits through the VPN server. This means that anyone that gains access to your network, will be unable to view your private internet activity. Even your ISP (Internet Service Provider) will be unable to see what you are up to online, which is important as ISPs are known to sell private user information for profit.

F-Secure Freedome VPN offers OpenVPN on Android, Mac, and Windows. OpenVPN is arguably the best and most secure protocols available. It is open-source, which means that it has been heavily scrutinized by developers for vulnerabilities and security issues. Freedome provides IPSEC, IKEv1, and IKEv2 on iOS. WireGuard is the newest open-source protocol and it promises to provide enhanced speeds. However, Freedome does not yet offer WireGuard, but we hope to see the provider adopt it in the near future.

When you connect to the internet through a VPN provider, that provider could have access to a significant amount of your information and it may abuse that access by selling your data to third parties for profit. Thus, it is necessary to carefully read the provider's privacy and no-logs policy to ensure it protects your privacy.

According to Freedome VPN's privacy policy, the provider does not store, share, or sell private user information. It will not monitor web traffic or any data that could potentially be used to link that activity to a specific person. However, there is a limited amount of information logging. The provider does store device information, IP addresses, VPN connection timestamps, bandwidth used, public IP addresses, and device hostnames. This data is stored for 90 days, which is a relatively long time when compared to other VPN services. We would like to see F-Secure follow other providers and strive to retain less information for a shorter period of time.

F-Secure Freedome VPN offers 2 features that are rarely seen in other VPN apps: cloud file and URL scanning, and a Tracker Mapper tool. When it comes to the cloud scanning feature the provider further anonymizes and separates user information and deletes it. The Tracker Mapper tool shows users how their private information may be tracked online and thus requires some data to be stored. These information logs can be manually deleted when you start a new log, or automatically every 3 days, which is reassuring.

The provider is located in Helsinki, Finland, and is thus subjected to Finnish law. F-Secure offers a privacy policy that states it will respond to legal requests for information. This is typical among VPNs, although many providers do take extra precautions to prevent over-reach from law enforcement agencies. F-Secure does not currently offer a public transparency report that would outline how it responds to such requests for user data. Also, many other VPN companies have started to release the results of independent security audits and we would like to see this cybersecurity company follow suit.

F-Secure Freedome VPN Features

65%

F-Secure Freedome VPN offers a pricing structure that is somewhat different from most other VPN services. Many providers offer monthly, yearly, and longer-term plans, with a discount if you sign up for a longer period.

Freedome does not offer a monthly subscription offer and starts at $34.99 a year for three simultaneous device connections. The industry standard is support for at least 5 devices. Users can opt to pay $69.99 a year to receive protection for 7 devices, or $89.99 for 2 years on 7 devices.

We would typically advise against starting with a long-term VPN subscription, at least to begin with. It is usually best to start with a free version, a short term plan, or at least opt for a VPN service that comes with a money-back guarantee. This means that you test the product and determine whether it works for you and offers access to all of the services and websites you require. Paying slightly more upfront can prevent you from signing up for a long-term plan with a VPN app that doesn't suit your needs.

On average, a VPN app costs $72.64 annually. This means that Freedome's $34.99 yearly price appears relatively cost-effective. However, it is necessary to note that most other VPN providers do offer at least 5 simultaneous device connections. To gain protection for more than 3 devices, it will be necessary to opt for Freedome's $69.99 a year plan. F-Secure Freedome does come with a 5-day free trial of its VPN app, which is useful.

The app offers access to just 29 server locations with 16 European locations, 9 locations in North America, 3 in Asia, and 1 in Australia. There are dedicated apps for macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android and support for up to 7 devices on the provider's premium plan.

Freedome does, however, only offer simple VPN protection and is relatively basic whence compared to other providers on the market. For example, the app lacks multi-hop VPN connections to reroute your data through multiple VPN servers, split-tunneling which allows users to choose which apps bypass the VPN connection, and Tor anonymization.

There is a kill-switch, which is an important addition to any VPN product. In the event that your VPN connection drops for any reason, the kill-switch will cut the transfer of unencrypted data so that your real IP address and private data do not become exposed.

The provider is also successful at unblocking some popular streaming sites including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+, although it is likely not the best option for an avid streaming fan.

Is Freedome VPN Good?

Freedome VPN is a well-designed and flexible VPN product that comes from security experts F-Secure. The Finland-based security company has an excellent track record in protecting user privacy on the internet. The VPN focuses on the basics and offers a relatively small server network across 29 locations (sixteen in Europe, 9 in North America, 3 in Asia, and 1 in Australia).

There are dedicated VPN easy to use apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, up to 7 simultaneous device connections, depending on your chosen subscription plan, and unlimited bandwidth. Freedome operates on OpenVPN on its Windows, macOS, and Android, but it does not offer the option to manually set up the VPN on routers or other devices. Users can only use the official F-Secure Freedome apps.

The provider will protect your privacy online and enable access to some geo-blocked content but it offers few additional security features, however, there is a tracker mapper app that blocks trackers. This includes an interactive visual map to show you the trackers that have already been blocked.

There is no monthly subscription option but you can use the VPN on 3 devices for about $2.92 a month for the first year if you opt for the yearly subscription plan. This price will increase to $4.58 a month if you renew the subscription for a second year.

If you want protection for more devices, you can opt for the provider’s premium plan that costs $5.83 a month for the first year, $7.50 a month thereafter. This is relatively expensive when compared to other VPN options on the market. F-Secure’s annual plan for 7 devices comes in at $69.99 a year, whereas Surfshark’s $47.88 plan protects an unlimited number of devices for two years instead of one.

However, F-Secure does offer a slightly better offer in its 2-year plan which is priced at $3.75 a month for the first year. There is also a 5-day free trial if you are not yet convinced and want to test the product before you commit to a paid plan. No credit card information or payment details are required to sign up for the free trial. And, if you are happy with the trial period, all of F-Secure’s paid plans are covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee too, for additional peace of mind.

Does F-Secure Log User Data?

F-Secure’s privacy policy is simple and easy to understand, even for a beginner. Many VPN providers’ privacy policies are extremely complicated and difficult to read. This provider offers a clear policy statement to reassure users that it does not share or sell any private user information, nor does it read or access user traffic. F-Secure also does not have the ability to link data traffic to a particular user. The no-logging policy is reassuring for users that are concerned about data protection.

However, there is a limited amount of information logging. The provider does store data including device identification, public IP addresses, VPN session durations, and bandwidth used. F-Secure does state that this information is stored for the purpose of identifying fraudulent use and it is deleted after 90 days. There is also no way to link your internet browsing activity to your device or IP address, which is good to know.

Despite that the extent of information logging is limited, we would like to see Freedome match other premium VPN companies and log less user information for a shorter period of time. We would also like to see the provider release a transparency report and complete an independent security audit of its service and statements for additional peace of mind.

The VPN app comes with a tracking protection feature. The provider highlights the potential issues associated with this feature. In order to offer traffic protection statistics, it is necessary that some amount of data is stored. However, Freedome’s privacy policy clearly states how this information is stored and when it will be deleted.

Overall, it appears that F-Secure makes a serious commitment to protecting your privacy online. You can rest assured that your privacy and anonymity are protected when connected to VPN Freedome.

Is Freedome Secure?

Despite the fact that Freedome VPN’s Android, Windows, and macOS apps operate on OpenVPN, there is room for improvement when it comes to its encryption standards. Unlike most other VPN companies, Freedome only utilizes AES-128 CBC encryption and not AES-256 CBC. This does not mean that your internet connection at risk, as AES-128 encryption is still near impossible to decipher, but we would like to see the company match the encryption standards of its competitors.

Freedome also comes with browsing protection, malware protection, and tracking protection to block traffic anomalies, tracking attempts, and malware. This is a worthwhile feature if you are concerned about malware, trackers, and adware threats on the internet.

Is Freedome Compatible with All Devices?

Freedome comes with a free trial enabling users to test out the service risk-free. There is an Android VPN app as well as dedicated easy to use clients for Windows, macOS, and iOS. This means that you can access a secure internet connection on any of your devices. There is a handy 30-day money-back guarantee, allowing you to test the product on your devices before you commit to a paid subscription plan.

Installing its Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10 app from the Google Play Store or app store should take no more than a couple of minutes. The Windows app is the most detailed of all Freedome VPN apps thanks to its control panel that offers Browsing Protection, Tracker Mapping, Tracker Protection, Settings, and Subscription options.

Once you have set up the client, VPN Freedome is extremely easy to use on Windows, however, it is perhaps too simple for expert users and there is little functionality. There are no server load or ping time statistics, no options to sort or filter server locations by country or speed, no split-tunneling feature to whitelist apps, and no Favorites section to save your most commonly used servers for easy access later on.

In the Settings, users have access to a few basic security features including a kill-switch to cut your home network connection if your VPN connection failed for any reason. However, there is no option to choose specific WiFi networks to protect, switch between protocols, or configure your OpenVPN connection.

Is Freedome VPN Good for Streaming?

Freedome VPN comes with no bandwidth limits and a range of security tools that make it a decent choice for streaming geo-restricted and blocked content on a range of sites. The provider was successful at accessing Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+. However, it could not overcome VPN-blocks on BBC iPlayer, which is disappointing.

While it may not offer the same sophisticated streaming service as some other VPN providers on the market, it does enable access to a host of content from around the world that would not typically be available in your region. And, thanks to its unlimited bandwidth, you can stream as much as you like without needing to worry about the amount of bandwidth you are consuming.

Does Freedome Offer a Good Server Network?

Using a VPN allows you to alter your IP location by connecting to servers located in different countries around the world. This allows you to overcome geo-restrictions on browsing, streaming, and gaming content from around the world. Thus, it is necessary to choose a VPN provider that offers a decent range of server locations. Freedome VPN secure provides a decent server network with locations in 29 different countries which is more than average among VPN providers.
