Mozilla, the non-profit organization behind the Firefox browser, has released a VPN service that aims to make users' internet experience more enjoyable while providing more privacy online. Since Mozilla is well-respected in the technology industry, it is no surprise that its VPN has already been met with praise for its no-nonsense approach to security.

With Mozilla, users can encrypt their web traffic, hide and change their IP address, and access geo-blocked websites. As well as this, Mozilla VPN offers a host of other advanced features that provide users with more security and better connection speeds.

Based on the fact that Mozilla is most well-known for its Firefox browser, many people wrongly assume that Mozilla VPN is just a Firefox VPN extension. However, this is not the case, and Mozilla supports many different operating systems, including Windows.

While Mozilla VPN isn't the cheapest service on the VPN market, it is more affordable than many of its competitors. If you want an easy-to-use, basic VPN service with a few advanced features, then Mozilla VPN is a great option.

Mozilla VPN Security

75%

Mozilla VPN prides itself on offering an array of excellent privacy and security features. First of all, every Mozilla VPN connection is secured with the WireGuard protocol. WireGuard is one of the best tunneling protocols since not only does it ensure that all of your internet traffic is hidden by advanced encryption, but it also guarantees fast speeds. As well as this, WireGuard is open-source, meaning it can be more easily scrutinized for security issues.

In 2021, Mozilla VPN added many security updates to improve its service. One of these was the option to enable users to set up custom DNS in the Mozilla VPN app. This allows users to send their DNS requests via a server of their choice for more security. Alternatively, users can tunnel DNS requests via Mozilla's servers as well. This ensures protection against DNS leaks, and several DNS leak tests we ran proved that the VPN is effective in this area.

With Mozilla VPN, your real IP address is hidden and changed when you connect to a remote server on the network. We checked for IP leaks and were pleased that our actual IP address wasn't exposed at any point during the VPN session.

Another great security tool that Mozilla VPN implemented in 2021 was its automatic kill switch. This update is automatically enabled upon download and can't be switched off. Although for some people, it may be inconvenient that the kill switch can't be disabled, it at least ensures that users are safe when searching the web at all times.

Mozilla VPN also added the Multi-Hop feature, which routes your internet traffic via two VPN servers instead of just one. This means you get two IP address changes, which makes it harder for any third parties to potentially find your real IP as it is hidden under an extra layer of protection.

User privacy is a big issue for VPN services, but luckily, Mozilla puts its users' privacy and security before profit. However, there is minimal data logging with the VPN. Mozilla VPN's privacy policy states that it stores some personal information for account and marketing purposes. Some of the data that Mozilla stores include your name, email address, payment details, IP address, device type, and operating system, hardware configuration, and some VPN session data, including connection times and server choices.

Mozilla VPN uses servers from Mullvad VPN's network. What this means is that user traffic is sent to the servers on Mullvad's network, and therefore falls under the privacy policy of the VPN provider. Fortunately, Mullvad VPN is completely no-logs, which means the company will not log any of your traffic.

For some people, the amount of data that Mozilla VPN logs, and the fact it shares its network traffic with Mullvad, may cause concern. Fortunately, Mozilla VPN has undergone an independent audit which may reassure users more. However, this audit was only of the VPN's various apps; a few security issues were found, but Mozilla solved these, which means the apps should be highly secure.

We're impressed by Mozilla VPN and its security features. As a Virtual Private Network that is relatively new to the VPN game, it performs well in the security and privacy area.

Mozilla VPN Features

70%

Mozilla VPN doesn't just offer VPN protection to protect user data online; it also comes with many additional features.

First of all, every Mozilla VPN subscription comes with unlimited bandwidth. What this means is that you can use the VPN as often as you'd like since there are no limits to data or bandwidth usage. So, if you like to stream all day with a VPN or need the VPN switched on to protect you while you work from home, Mozilla VPN is a good choice.

Mozilla is also a good option for streaming fans, but not the best. If you want to watch US Netflix from anywhere in the world, you can since Mozilla unblocks this version of the streaming platform. As well as this, it can unblock the UK streaming service, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime Video. However, we weren't unable to unblock other platforms during testing, such as Hulu; this could improve, and Mozilla VPN may be able to bypass geo-blocks on more streaming sites in the future.

While it is entirely possible to torrent with Mozilla VPN, the servers aren't optimized for this. However, the great security features in place, such as the kill switch, will help prevent any data leaks which could reveal your download data to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Internet connection speeds are good with Mozilla VPN, partly due to the fact that the VPN provider uses WireGuard, which enables fast speeds. Another way to ensure constantly fast speeds is to enable split tunneling. The split tunneling feature can be found in the settings panel on the app, under 'App Permissions,' and allows users to select which traffic goes through the VPN tunnel and which goes through the regular network. By using split tunneling, users can enjoy faster speeds as the VPN is not affecting all traffic on the device.

Another way to enjoy fast speeds is to use the automatically connect tab in the VPN app; clicking on this will establish a connection to the fastest VPN server. If you're looking for a specific server, then you can also choose from one of the 400 servers spread across 30 countries. Unfortunately, Mozilla VPN doesn't offer as many server locations as other VPN providers, which is a little disappointing.

There are dedicated apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and Linux. The apps and desktop clients have user-friendly interfaces and are easy to navigate. However, the VPN features on offer in each app vary depending on the operating system you use. You get five simultaneous connections with one subscription, which is the industry average but a little low for users with multiple devices.

So, while there are some disadvantages to Mozilla VPN's features, such as a small number of servers and limited simultaneous connections, there are many advantages like fast speeds and features such as split tunneling.

Is Mozilla VPN Secure?

The question on every security-conscious user before buying a VPN is: is the VPN service secure? Since VPNs are used to hide internet data, you want to ensure that the service you use will protect your privacy and not exploit it.

Fortunately, Mozilla VPN is a secure service. There are several reasons for this, the most apparent being that Mozilla VPN connections run on the WireGuard protocol. WireGuard creates a secure connection and is especially useful when you want to browse the web on public wi-fi networks. Mozilla VPN also implements a lot of other tools to keep traffic secure, including DNS and IP leak protection.

However, the best way to know if a VPN service is secure and will protect customer data is by taking a look at its privacy policy. Although Mozilla VPN stores more data than many other VPN services, all server network activity remains private. This is thanks to Mullvad VPN’s no-logging policy; since Mozilla VPN uses the same servers as Mullvad VPN, all Mozilla customers automatically enjoy this privilege too.

Is Mozilla VPN Free?

There is not a free version of Mozilla VPN available. Mozilla VPN addresses the reasons behind this on its website, stating, “While free VPNs seem attractive, they do not make the same commitments to privacy as Mozilla VPN.”

This is a good point; while there are many great free VPNs, on average, the majority sell user data to fund their services. Mozilla VPN doesn’t do this, and the great tools on offer to protect user privacy is explanation enough as to why the service isn’t free.

How Much is Mozilla VPN?

Mozilla VPN currently offers three subscription options:

The monthly plan is relatively good value for money, considering that many other VPN services offer rolling monthly subscriptions at $11 per month or higher. However, the 6-month and year-long plans are considerably more expensive than other VPN subscriptions of a similar length. For example, Surfshark’s 12-month standard plan costs $2.49 per month. This means Mozilla VPN’s annual plan is almost $2.50 more expensive each month.

This isn’t to say that Mozilla VPN isn’t worth the high price since it is a good service; however, it seems that customers may be paying more for the Mozilla name.

Can You Purchase a Mozilla VPN Plan with Bitcoin?

Many of the best VPN services have started accepting cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, as the crypto market booms. At the moment, Mozilla VPN doesn’t accept cryptocurrency as a payment method. However, users can purchase one of its plans either using PayPal or with a debit or credit card such as Visa, MasterCard, or American Express.

Does Mozilla VPN Have a Refund Policy?

Every new Mozilla VPN customer is entitled to a 30-day money-back guarantee. This refund policy dictates that first-time users can get a full refund if they claim it back before the end of the first month.

Unfortunately, the 30-day money-back guarantee is only available for first-time customers. This means if you have used Mozilla VPN before and sign up for a new subscription, you won’t be entitled to the money-back guarantee.

Moreover, if you purchase a subscription to Mozilla VPN via the App Store or Google Play Store, then you will have to contact these stores to claim back a refund, as the Mozilla VPN refund policy does not apply.

Is Mozilla VPN a Firefox Browser Extension?

Mozilla VPN is a separate product from the Mozilla team. It isn’t associated with the Firefox browser, aside from being created by the same company. This means it isn’t a VPN Firefox browser extension but can be installed to protect your entire device.

This isn’t to say that Mozilla VPN cannot be used in conjunction with the Firefox browser; however, it isn’t a VPN extension but VPN software that needs to be set up on your operating system of choice.

Mozilla VPN is compatible with five different operating systems: Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Linux. You can set up the VPN on any device that runs on one of the compatible systems listed above and then activate it. Then, you can visit the Mozilla Firefox browser and know that all your online activity will be private.

How Do I Set Up Mozilla VPN on My Devices?

You don’t need any technical knowledge to set up Mozilla VPN since Mozilla makes the entire process easy by offering native apps and tech tutorials on its website.

To set up Mozilla on your desktop, you’ll need to sign in to your account on the website and then sign up for the VPN subscription program of your choice. After choosing the app you wish to download, the installation process should automatically start, and you’ll just need to confirm the steps on the setup wizard.

To download Mozilla VPN’s Android app or iOS app, you have a couple of options. Users can either follow the same steps as above or visit the App Store on iPhone or Google Play Store on Android and download the apps this way. If you choose to set up the VPN app on your phone by purchasing from one of the App Stores, make sure that you have already purchased a subscription on the Mozilla VPN website.

Can Mozilla VPN Unblock Netflix?

Although Mozilla VPN offers fewer server location options than other VPNs, it still provides users with many IP addresses from around the world. This means users can connect to a VPN server, change their IP address and virtual location, and access all the sites that they can’t access in their current location.

So, how does Mozilla VPN fare when it comes to unblocking Netflix? Fortunately, the VPN works on US Netflix, the British site BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime Video. While it is disappointing that Mozilla VPN didn’t work on multiple Netflix libraries, the fact that it can provide access to Netflix in the US is an excellent sign.

Does Mozilla VPN Support Torrenting?

There is no mention on the Mozilla VPN website that torrenting isn’t allowed on the servers. In fact, users can torrent when using Mozilla VPN, but we wouldn’t say that the VPN is the best service for P2P file sharing.

Firstly, Mozilla VPN lacks a few features that torrenting-friendly VPNs like Private Internet Access offer. For example, there isn’t a SOCKS5 proxy or port forwarding, both of which are extremely useful for torrenting.

However, Mozilla VPN does provide a kill switch and split tunneling, both of which can aid with torrenting. The kill switch ensures that downloads aren’t exposed if the VPN server drops, and split tunneling allows users to send only their torrenting traffic through the VPN connection.

How Fast is Mozilla VPN?

In general, Mozilla VPN’s download speeds are pretty good based on the speed tests we ran. However, many factors affect speed, so if you want a consistently fast download speed with Mozilla VPN, there are a few features that the VPN offers which you can use to ensure that.

Firstly, you can use the automatic connect button to connect to the fastest and closest server in terms of location. This will ensure fast speeds since the closer you are to the VPN server, the less distance your data has to travel.

Since Mozilla VPN does offer split tunneling, users can also take advantage of this for faster speeds. By deciding which website activity they want to be protected by the VPN, they can send all of their regular network activity outside of the VPN tunnel. This means the VPN connection won’t affect the speed of all data.

Does Mozilla VPN Block Ads?

While Mozilla doesn’t have a built-in ad-blocking feature, users can block potentially malicious URLs which contain ads by using the custom DNS feature in the advanced settings section of the VPN app. Users can activate content blocking DNS servers, which can assist in keeping you more secure and safe as you surf the web.

Can You Use Mozilla VPN in China?

The Great Firewall of China makes it extremely difficult for users living in China to access international sites and freely browse the internet.

Some VPNs can easily bypass the internet restrictions that exist in China. However, Mozilla VPN is not one of these services. On its website, Mozilla VPN explicitly states that “The Mozilla VPN will not work if your connection originates in the People’s Republic of China.”

Therefore, if you’re living in or planning on visiting China, you won’t be able to use Mozilla VPN.

Does Mozilla VPN Offer Customer Support?

Like any good service, Mozilla VPN offers customer support to users in need of help. Firstly, there is a support section on the website with billing information, FAQs, and setup guides for VPN users. If you don’t find the answer you’re searching for in the help section on the website, you can also directly contact customer support.

To get in touch with the customer support team, you’ll need to sign in to your Firefox account, which you’ll have created during the purchase period. Then, you can send them a message and wait for a personal response from a member of the support team.

There is no live chat support on the Mozilla VPN website, which is disappointing. A live chat would provide an easy and quick way for users to get in touch with the support team. Moreover, the support section for the VPN is not immediately visible and is tucked away beneath many web pages on the Mozilla site.

How Does Mozilla VPN Compare to Mullvad VPN?

Since Mozilla VPN uses the same servers as Mullvad VPN, it is easy to draw comparisons between the two.

Interestingly, the two VPN services are similar in many areas, such as the streaming support on offer, server speeds, and permitting torrenting on its network. However, there are many differences.

For one thing, Mullvad VPN offers a set price on its plans and doesn’t offer varying subscription lengths. Furthermore, Mullvad collects no customer information – not even email addresses. Users can sign up using an activation code, which helps them stay more anonymous.

Mullvad VPN is an excellent option for users who want total privacy online; however, for those who are loyal Mozilla fans, Mozilla VPN is still a safe option.

Is Mozilla VPN Worth Using?

Is Mozilla VPN a service that PrivacySharks would recommend using? Yes, it is. Mozilla VPN prioritizes user security and privacy and includes great tools to ensure that this is never compromised.

We also really like that Mozilla offers native apps for the most popular operating systems. This makes the whole process of using the VPN a lot easier, especially for VPN novices who don’t necessarily have the technological know-how to set up a VPN connection manually.

So, if you’re willing to part with a bit of money and spend more than you would with a rival VPN, why not try out Mozilla VPN?
